CAMP Study

Study Type

Study Purpose

The purpose of the CAMP pilot research study (Caffeine and Albuterol's Effect on Muscle Production) is to determine the effect of an investigational combination of caffeine and albuterol, taken three times daily, on muscle, fat and hunger in obese adolescents ages 12-17. Albuterol is FDA-approved for the treatment of asthma in adolescents but is not approved to affect muscle and body fat in adolescents in combination with caffeine.

About the Study

The CAMP study will seek to understand the safety and effectiveness of this investigational drug combination in an adolescent population, as compared to a placebo. Specifically, the study will assess the effect of the investigational drug combination on fat mass and lean body mass in obese adolescents, as well as examine effect on hunger levels.

Study Design

After an initial screening visit that includes blood tests, a physical examination and questionnaires, a baseline visit will be conducted with additional questionnaires and a body composition scan. Eligible participants will return to the outpatient clinic at Pennington Biomedical every two weeks for vital signs, questionnaires and nutritional counseling. Participants will receive an investigational combination of
oral albuterol and caffeine, or a placebo, three times per day for a total of eight weeks. Number of Visits:

  • 1 screening visit
  • 1 baseline visit
  • 4 study visits

  • Questionnaires
  • Bone density scan (DXA) for body composition
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) for heart health
  • Vital signs and measurements
  • Blood draws
