PLAY Study

Study Type

Pediatrics

Study Purpose

The PLAY research study will evaluate if a specially designed program delivered through a mobile phone app can help improve fundamental motor skills in pre-school aged kids.

Fundamental motor skills, like running, jumping and skipping, are an important foundation for kids to develop healthy physical activity habits and continue those habits into adolescence. Fundamental motor skills also play a role in children’s readiness for kindergarten.

About the Study

PLAY participants and parents will attend an initial screening visit at a local YMCA to learn about the study, review participation guidelines, and receive a wearable device to track physical activity, which will be used for 7 days at a time and returned at a later visit.

Participants and parents will have three additional visits at the YMCA during the study (over a 6-month period). Each visit will be about 1 hour.

All parents of enrolled participants will receive a study app on their phone. One app focuses on free play and the other app focuses on motor skills. Parents and children will use the app for 12-weeks for about 1 hour each week. Each week will have a “mission,” and child can earn stars on the app as they complete their mission.
