Study Purpose

The purpose of the PortionSize Peds research study is to test the use of an iPhone app, PortionSize, and to measure children and parents or caregivers’ dietary intake.

About the Study

Participants will visit Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) and be trained in how to use the PortionSize app before measuring portion size and estimating food intake.

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • 1 study visit at PBRC clinic and assessments of food intake (at least one meal and one snack) with the app at home for at least 2 consecutive days

Procedures:

  • Medical history
  • Height and weight
  • Questionnaires
  • Training on the PortionSize app
  • Children will assess a simulated meal at PBRC clinic with the app at clinic
  • Parents or caregivers will use the app to estimate the food intake of their children (at least one meal and a snack) for at least two consecutive days at home.

Study Qualifications

To qualify for this research study,

  • Children should be between the ages of 7-12 years old and be willing to use the app
  • Parents or caregivers (aged 18-62 years) should be willing to use the app to estimate the food intake of their child

Study Duration

Participation in the study will last approximately 3 days.

Compensation

Compensation of up to $125 ($50 for children and $75 for parents or caregivers) is offered for the completion of this study.
