Greaux Baby Study

Study Type

Pediatrics

Study Purpose

The goal of the Greaux Baby research study is to explore how early life nutrition, specifically human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), impacts the health and development of formula fed infants and toddlers through 24 months of age.

HMOs are carbohydrates that are naturally found in human breast milk, but are not always present in formula. HMOs provide many health benefits. For example, HMOs may help to protect infants against infections, support digestive health, as well as potentially improve cognitive development.

About the Study

Infants who are exclusively fed infant formula for the first 6 months may qualify for this study.

If you decide to participate in the study, you will be asked to provide your infant with 1 of 2 infant formulas. Your infant will be randomly assigned to either:

  • The experimental study product group, where you will be asked to feed your infant a milk-based infant formula and toddler drink with HMOs through 24 months of age.
  • The control study product group, where you will be asked to feed your infant a similar milk-based infant formula and toddler drink without HMOs through 24 months of age.

Both the experimental and control infant formulas meet the nutritional requirements for infants. Both the experimental and control toddler drinks provide nutrients similar to cow’s milk with more vitamins and minerals.

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • Up to 7 visits to the Pennington Biomedical Clinic over a period of about 2 years
  • Up to 7 phone call visits

Procedures for mothers:

  • Questionnaires

Procedures for infants:

  • Length, weight, and head circumference measurements
  • Questionnaires and optional behavior tests (to evaluate your baby’s feeding and sleeping behaviors, and motor, problem solving, and social skills)
  • Food intake and stool records
  • Stool collection

To qualify for this study, infants should:

  • Be healthy and between 0 to 14 days (2 weeks) old
  • Be born full-term (37 to 42 weeks gestational age, inclusive)
  • Intend to be fed infant formula exclusively through 6 months of age

You may not qualify for this study based on other eligibility criteria not listed. The study team will go over this information in detail.

Study Duration

Participation in this research study will last approximately 2 years.

Compensation

Participants will receive compensation for their time spent in the study. Participants will receive study formula for 12 months at no cost. Additionally, participants will receive a toddler drink from 12 months to 24 months at no cost.
